concept: What criteria are important to us.

In our seminars, we have dealt with numerous film and television films and series. We limit the investigation to clergy in leading roles in films and series. The dominating effect of the supporting roles seems limited. Here ministers are mainly used as a symbol amplifier in rituals, celebrations or official acts.

To give you some criteria to hand, what movies here may add to our scientific investigation, here are some short Defitionen:

  1. of interest for this study are all movies and series that are shown in the German-speaking or were seen in the past. The German-speaking involves the German dubbed or subtitled foreign films. This usually includes all as a video cassette or DVD movies can be borrowed or venal. (Also:. Every movie you can get to see normal)
  2. The term pastor designate all male and female clergy of different religious affiliation. clergy are generally of a church, community or institution in charge of their office or appointed. So that all are not excluded by institutions or groups to authorized persons.
  3. pastor in documentaries, TV church services, talk shows, quiz shows, docu-soaps, etc. are not objects of investigation this project. Even if this genre for the pastor image on television certainly of interest, they are subject to other variables as the staging area we analyzed the fictional entertainment.
  4. main roles are roles that appear distributed throughout the film and play a major role. Actors make crucial scenes and action sequences. As a criterion may be that an omission of these scenes, or a loss of this actor the film would change significantly. If omitted scenes do not change the film much more specific roles, can be excluded for this project from a supporting role can be assumed.

results

The first results are based on the examination of 53 feature films with pastors in leading roles in July 2004 (see publications).

the following numbers is the evaluation of 86 films on the basis of specially designed questionnaires as a basis.

First is striking that over 70% of the find as the main role is Catholic priest. 88% did not play but the main role but had to share with other figures. The name "minister film as a whole is justified: One of 86 films analyzed represented a pastor in the lead role (Caution-not angels).

The figure the pastor is a complete movie theme. Since 1937, Pastor movies come in every decade and in almost all genres several times before - with the exception of the Western and science fiction films. "Praised be Jesus Christ" The official clothing disappears as more and more of everyday life such as the greeting: Over the years, "normalized" to the ministry.

The following chart shows the distribution of motifs ("no entries" or "Multiple responses" is possible), a definition of the motifs can be found in the already mentioned work by Gerhard Beck
